Report Reflects Bet-- ter Business Conditions Maxwell Says RALEIGH Dec Sl-ftP) North Carolina closed the first half of its fiscal year today with revenue re- ceipts running 24 per cent above the same period last year Receipts for the six months totaled $31840 88248 an increase of $618131817 over the last half-of 1935 A Maxwell revenue commissioner said the monthly financial report released today reflected better business conditions throughout the State Levies during December totaled $507415301 a gain of $997-56819 or 2379 per cent over December 1935 1 1 tax payments generally regarded as a direct barometer of business Jumped from $95367124 in December 1935 to $98347989 General fund receipts during the month were $142660954 and high way receipts totaled $3648254347 Sales tax for the six-month perloc was $547136148 compared to $5' 11134149 during the last half of 1935 Gasoline tax receipts also looked upon as a business indicator were $186109673 in December compared with $173415265 a year ago and were $1139793882 for six months as compared to $1015261994 in the period last year Beer taxes continued to show an appreciable increase being $66 373 29 in December as compared to $4896585 in December 1935 In six months the general fund receipts were $1757836499 up 30 per cent over last year while motor vehicle division receipts were $1436261747 up 16 per cent $35000000 Spent In During Year Ending June 30 Survey Discloses RALEIGH Dec 31-MV-The endless business of educating North Carolina children cost approximate ly $35000000 during the fiscal year ending June 30 1938 an increase of more than $5000000 over the pre ceding term An Associated Press survey coupled with figures released today by the State School commission shows the share of the huge pot needed to finance the education of 891265 youngsters came from the North Carolina treasury which contributed $20155735 Twenty-nine school districts defining educational standards higher than the' State level of an eight-month term and 11 grades swelled the total by $3271645 52 in supplementary funds Debt service-money put up to pay the interest and retire the principal of school obligations cost $52 1 7979 90 Capi tal outlay for school buildings and equipment totaled $160360236 $3940454 FROM PWA Stanley right State public works administration director said the PWA donated $3940454 for public school projects in North Carolina during the fiscal year Total cost of the projects was $8-165566 he added with school districts contributing $2225112 George Coan Jr State Works Progress
